GeoSUR Program: Training Workshop on Geo-services and Integration of Regional Spatial Data
July 30 - August 10, 2007
Sioux Falls, SD, USA

The first GeoSUR training workshop for web map service’s development and integration of regional spatial data was held at the Earth Resources Observation and Science Center (EROS) of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on July 30 - August 10, 2007. The workshop was funded by the Andean Development Corporation (in Spanish CAF), and organized by the GeoSUR Program coordinating institutions: CAF, the Pan-American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH), and the Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN); with support of the Military Geographic Institute of Chile, the National Geographic Institute of Colombia "Agustin Codazzi", and the USGS. The Organization of American States (OAS) contributed to the implementation of the workshop by means of funding 20 air tickets for participants.

Twenty two specialists from geographic and environmental institutions of fourteen Latin American countries participated in this workshop. Specialists acquired conceptual bases and essential techniques to develop map services in their respective institutions, and returned to their countries with the required prototypes and the spatial data needed for the implementation of web map services. During next two years GeoSUR will offer them and their institutions the technical support, training, and institutional monitoring required to develop these type of services and to integrate them into a South American GeoPortal that will offer access to regional geographical data. As part of this workshop, each participant built a map service prototype using its own country’s spatial information. The participant’s digital maps were integrated into a real-time Central and South America map, thus simulating the future operation of GeoSUR in the region. The start-up of technical activities for development and implementation of the GeoSUR Program in the region were successfully achieved with this first workshop.
